A devastating crisis has ravaged the Irri community in Isoko South Local Government Area of Delta State, Nigeria, since 2011. The conflict, fueled by a struggle for power and control over oil contracts, has claimed numerous lives, displaced many residents, and left the community in a state of turmoil.
The crisis began when the Nigerian Agip Oil Company (NAOC) arrived in the community to explore and extract crude oil. As tensions rose, local residents expressed concerns about the potential environmental and social impacts of oil extraction. Tragically, in March 10 2013 several lives were lost, including that of Chief L.E. Orahemo, a respected community leader who had been advocating for the rights of the Irri people. Other victims included Mr. Edioina Umukoro, Peter Aruno, Harrison Uzokpa, Okemute Okogba and Clement Oghighe
The son of the Odio-Ologbo (royal father) of the community was also brutally beheaded. According to reports, no fewer than 15 persons have been murdered including a younger brother to Chief L E Orahemo in the community within a six-year period.
The traditional ruler, Ovieseriba Ojenuwe 11, the Odio-Ologbo Kingdom, has accused a prominent son and business mogul from the town of sponsoring the violence. The monarch, who fled into exile due to the crisis, has appealed to the Federal Government to intervene and restore peace to the community.
The conflict has resulted in the displacement of hundreds of residents, who have fled to neighboring towns in search of safety. The community remains in a state of chaos, with “killer gangs” allegedly sponsored by leaders, roaming the streets with impunity.
