The reason for transitioning from the prisons to corrections by the federal govt may not be yielding desired impacts.
This is because the staffers of the Nigerian Correctional Service, NCS at the various centres are bent on sustaining the odd culture that necessitated the crucial departure.
Early this week at the Ikoyi correctional facility, warders allegedly assaulted, dehumanized inmates , so much so that some inmates are now receiving treatments at some hospitals.
WHY THEY WERE BEATEN AND INJURED
Investigations had it that the brutalized inmates were the ones who failed to pay the officials for being allowed to use phones.
It was gathered that the warders moved into the cells to seize the phones from them and resorted to neck breaking, scrotums squeezing and blows even while they slept.
Their sins were not paying the officials who allowed them to use phones in detention.
THE KIRIKIRI FEMALE CENTRE SAGA
Further investigation outcomes showed that at Kirikiri female centre ( perhaps everywhere ), the warders extort inmates who have court cases.
According to findings, each person that must go to the court is forced to pay as much as 3,000, 4, 000 and 5,000 to officials as transportation charges before they are conveyed to the various courts.
It was learnt that the distance of your court determines your fee, and whoever fails to pay will not be transported to the court.
It is amazing how the correctional administration permits these official indiscipline in a system that has budgetary allocations for the running of the nation’s prisons or correctional Centres.
Many a concerned citizen wonder if the minister of the interior , federal republic of Nigeria is aware of these situations that negatively impact inmates who should be turning new leafs rather than getting toughened by I’ll treats in incarceration.
