The influence of leadership is a powerful force that shapes the rhythms of society. Leaders, whether they realize it or not, play a tune that influences the beat of their citizens’ lives. The melody of their message, the harmony of their policies, and the rhythm of their actions all come together to create a symphony that can either uplift or destroy the character contents of their citizens.
When leaders play the character of hope and unity, society dances to the beat of progress, inclusivity and broader concerns for all. The rhythm of their leadership inspires citizens to be patriotic and work together towards a common goal, to celebrate their differences, and to strive for a brighter future.
On the other side of the coin, when leaders play the character of nepotism and corruption, society dances to the beat of discord, strife and disregard for national wellbeing. The melody of their message creates an atmosphere of suspicion, egocentrism and mistrust, where citizens are pitted against each other and progress is hindered.
In Africa, we have seen both types of leaders. We’ve seen leaders who play the character of liberation, inspiring their citizens to fight for freedom, equality and collective progress as we have it in the person of Ibrahim Traore of Burkina Faso, a true African soldier. We have also seen leaders who play the character of oppression, corruption, playing to Western galleries, using their power to silence dissenting voices and maintain their grip on power as we have it in most African nations. It is so unfortunate that in Africa, most of the so called democratic Presidents are dictators whose appetite for public wealth can never be satisfied.
The upshot of leadership is not just limited to politicians. Business leaders, religious leaders, community leaders, school teachers, guardians and parents all play a tune that influences the lives of those around them. When these leaders play the music of integrity and accountability, society benefits from their positive influence.
However, when they play the music of greed and exploitation, society suffers from their negative impact. The nature of their leadership creates an atmosphere of corruption and mistrust, where more criminals are created, celebrated and where the powerful prey on the vulnerable.
As we reflect on the state of our world, it’s clear that the nature of leadership matters. The tune that leaders play has a profound impact on the lives of their citizens, shaping the rhythms of society and influencing the course of history.
So, let’s choose to enthrone, accept, defend and associate with the type of leadership that inspires hope, unity, and progress. Let’s demand that our leaders play the melody of integrity, accountability, and transparency. For it’s only when we dance to the beat of positive leadership that we can create a world that’s more just, more equitable, and more harmonious. It is a humanity call to demand positive leadership and work with others to create a rythm of positive change that inspires a brighter future for all.
